Women's Soccer Records Third Straight Shutout Win; Kovarik Nets Third Hat-Trick On Season
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Behind Molly Kovarik’s second hat-trick in as many games, the Fontbonne University women’s soccer team recorded its third straight shutout with a 5-0 win over Principia.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Behind Molly Kovarik's second hat-trick in as many games, the Fontbonne University women's soccer team recorded its third straight shutout with a 5-0 win over Principia.
The Griffins (5-5-1; 2-0 SLIAC), totaled 32 shots in the victory while holding the Panthers (1-7; 1-1 SLIAC) to just two.
Kovarik scored goals 12, 13, and 14 on the season. She's currently tied for sixth all-time in the record books with Meredith Wendt, who finished with 14 goals during the 2016 season.
Rebecca Bass and Emily Cardwell both netted its fourth goals on the season. In net, Makayla Hussong picked up her second win on the season.
In the first, at the 10:53 mark, Caroline Neal passed the ball ahead for Kovarik and she beat the Panthers goalie on the short-side for the 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, the Griffins struck again.
Kovarik passed it up ahead for Bass and she ripped her shot from the right side to the far corner of the net, extending the advantage out to 2-0. Kovarik added one more goal in the 28th minute to give Fontbonne a 3-0 lead at the break.
In the second, at 55:08, Darby Schaefering pushed the ball ahead for Kovarik and she fended off the Panthers defense, tipping it past Hannah Hathaway for the hat-trick. Cardwell added the final goal in the 64th minute off a rebound shot to make it a 5-0 final.
Fontbonne stays home this weekend for a showdown against Greenville on Saturday. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m.
