Fontbonne Women's Soccer Ranks No. 21 In The United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—For the first time in program history, the Fontbonne University women’s soccer team enters the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll coming in at No. 21.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—For the first time in program history, the Fontbonne University women's soccer team enters the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll coming in at No. 21.
The Griffins are coming off a 2021 campaign where the team went 11-1 overall and a perfect 9-0 in conference play becoming the first team in program history to go unbeaten against SLIAC opponents.
Fontbonne won the SLIAC Regular Season Title for the first time since 2012 and advanced to the SLIAC Championship for the first time since 2017.
At the conclusion of the season, the Griffins had a program-record 10 players named to the SLIAC All-Conference Team, including a SLIAC record six players be named to the First Team.
Head Coach Dylan Cassidy was named SLIAC Coach of the Year, while Molly Kovarik became the first in program history to win SLIAC Player of the Year. Defensively, Mary Beers also was the first in program history to win SLIAC Defensive Player of the Year.
Beers and Kovarik were joined on the First Team by Krystal Kohenskey, Caitlyn Smith, Kierstyn Weaver, and Claire Dalton. Caroline Neal and Alexandria Smith were named to the Second Team, while Rylee Stafford and Riley Maag garnered Third Team honors.
As a team, the Griffins finished with 45 goals ranking ninth all-time at Fontbonne, while its three goals allowed was a new program record.
Individually, Kovarik led with 10 goals giving her 36 and 81 points in her career. She's all alone in fifth at Fontbonne in goals scored needing just 13 to become the all-time leader, while being tied for fourth in points.
Kohenskey dominated in her first season with the Griffins after transferring over from MacMurray. The junior posted seven goals and tied for the nation lead with 13 assists. Smith ended with six goals, while Weaver and Neal had five each.
In net, Beers was outstanding accounting for a career-high 11 wins and tying the single-season record with nine shutouts.
