Fontbonne Women's Soccer Announces 2021 Schedule
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—After winning its first SLIAC Regular Season Title since 2012, the Fontbonne University women’s soccer team looks to defend its top spot in a full 2021 season.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—After winning its first SLIAC Regular Season Title since 2012, the Fontbonne University women's soccer team looks to defend its top spot in a full 2021 season.
Last year, the Griffins went 11-1 and a perfect 9-0 under first-year head coach Dylan Cassidy, who was named SLIAC Coach of the Year. The team also finished the year ranked No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll for the first time in program history.
The Griffins netted 45 goals in just 12 games and limited teams to a program record three goals. In net, Mary Beers, who became the first Fontbonne player to win SLIAC Defensive Player of the Year, tied the program record with nine shutouts and set a single-season record with a goals against average of .26. She's eight shutouts away from becoming the all-time leader at Fontbonne.
Offensively, the Griffins were led by SLIAC Player of the Year, Molly Kovarik, who also became the first player in program history to win the honor. The Festus, Mo., native, finished with 10 goals giving her 36 in her career. She needs just 13 more to become the all-time leader at Fontbonne which is held by Kendra Schilli with 48.
Newcomer Krystal Kohenskey was a bright spot offensively as well with seven goals and tied for first in the nation with 13 assists for a team-high 27 points. Caitlyn Smith had a strong first season with six goals and three assists for 15 points, while Caroline Neal and Kierstyn Weaver had five goals each.
This year, the team returns much of its roster from a season ago including all 10 players who were named to the SLIAC All-Conference team, six of which were named to the First Team which is a program and SLIAC record.
The team welcomes in six newcomers in Rachel Harris, Jordan Owens, Elizabeth Modrusic, Katie Leeker, Alyson Carroll and Mia Biermann.
Schedule Notes
- The team will have three exhibition games against Columbia State CC (Aug. 20th), St. Charles Community College (Aug. 26th), and Illinois Springfield (Aug. 29th).
- The Griffins home opener will be on Sept. 4th against No. 4 WashU.
- Other non-conference opponents include Carthage (Sept. 11th) and Loras (Sept. 12th)
- Its first conference game will take place on Sept. 14th at Principia
- The team will have nine home games.
- Senior Day will take place on Oct. 23rd against Blackburn.
