Fontbonne Women's Soccer Uses Second Half Scoring Burst To Knock Off Blue Jays
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—In a rematch of the SLIAC Championship from last spring, the Fontbonne University women’s soccer team got some redemption with a 3-1 victory over the Westminster Blue Jays.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—In a rematch of the SLIAC Championship from last spring, the Fontbonne University women's soccer team got some redemption with a 3-1 victory over the Westminster Blue Jays.
Game Breakdown
It was a dominant performance for 90:00 minutes both offensively and defensively from Fontbonne. Despite, the Griffins having a 10-1 shot advantage in the first half the team was unable to find twine and it remained a scoreless contest at the break.
In the second half, that all changed with the Griffins finally breaking through in the 49th minute. Caitlyn Smith passed the ball up ahead for Krystal Kohenskey and the Troy, Mo., native, scored her second on the season into the top right corner.
Just 10:00 minutes later, the Griffins struck again. Kohenskey's corner kick found Caroline Neal on the near post and she scored her fourth on the year to extend the lead out to 2-0.
The Griffins offense didn't stop there as in the 68th minute Molly Kovarik's attempt was stopped by Megan Davidson, however she couldn't corral the loose ball allowing Neal to step into it and net her second of the game.
The Blue Jays played spoiler eliminating the shutout in the 88th minute but Fontbonne closed out the final couple minutes for the two-goal victory.
Fontbonne Notables
- The Griffins ended with 36 shots and 26 coming in the second half alone.
- Kohenskey was busy offensively in her return to the lineup with 12 shots and seven landing on goal. Her goal and assist were both No. 2 on the season.
- Neal is now tied with Kovarik with five goals on the year.
- Smith registered her second assist on the season.
- Mary Beers made two saves in net.
