Women's tennis grabs first victory of the season
The Fontbonne University women's tennis team knocked off Blackburn College yesterday 6-3 to earn their first victory of the season. The Griffins are now 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
Fontbonne got strong performance from Mary Gould, Megan Schmittel and Sara Mueller. All three of these Griffins won their singles match as well as their doubles match. Gould and Schmittel teamed together to win their doubles match 8-0. Gould won her singles match 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3 while Schmittel won her singles match 6-1 and 6-3.
Mueller teamed with Libby Brauss to win their doubles match in dramatic fashion 9-8. Mueller won her singles match 6-3 and 6-1.
The win also marks the first career collegiate coaching victory for first-year head coach Adam Franke.
The women's tennis team returns to action Saturday when they host Hendrix College at 9:00 am and Maryville University at 5:00 pm.
