ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's volleyball team opened its 2021 campaign with a tough straight set loss against (RV) WashU.

(RV) WashU def. Fontbonne (25-10, 25-23, 25-19)

The Basics

Set 1: The Bears started out fast in the first grabbing an 11-3 lead. It was all WashU the rest of the way going on for the 25-10 win.

Set 2: After having a negative -.061 hitting percentage in the first set, the Griffins got things rolling on both sides of the net in the second. The team opened with an 11-7 lead on Ella Werner-Click kill which forced the Bears to take a timeout.

Fontbonne continued to hold its lead with a 21-19 narrow advantage. However, the Bears went on a 3-0 run to take the lead back. The two teams traded points, but it was the Bears pulling away for the 25-23 win. Fontbonne finished with nine kills in the second.

Set 3: WashU carried that momentum into the third owning a 16-9 lead on Jasmine Sells kill. The Bears stretched it out to 23-13 and collected the 25-18 win on Sells' kill.

Fontbonne Leaders

Hannah Gallagher led with a team-high seven kills.
Jordan Harpel had a strong debut with six kills on 12 swings for a .333 hitting percentage.
Ella Werner-Click handed out 20 assists and tied Emma Pramik for a team-high seven digs.
