How It Happened
It was back-and-forth play early in the first half, but the Griffins gained an 18-11 lead at the 13:47 mark on Jalen Wadlington's made jumper. Two minutes later, the Highlanders trimmed the deficit down to 18-17 on Elijah Powell's layup.
However, the Griffins rattled off a 10-0 run to take a 28-17 lead on Jared Woodcock's 3-pointer with 8:40 remaining. The team held onto its double-digit lead the rest of the way and went into the break on top, 51-39.
Fontbonne shot 48.8 percent from the field in the first and limited themselves to just four turnovers. Defensively, they forced 13 MacMurray turnovers. Woodcock led Fontbonne with 16 points in 17 minutes of action, while Elijah Rice already set a season-high with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
In the second half, the Griffins offense continued to roll right along with Anthony Jones hitting his jumper at 16:29 to put Fontbonne ahead, 60-44. Fontbonne shot 58.1 percent from the field in the final 20:00 minutes and came away with 11 more turnovers.
On the defensive side, they also held the Highlanders a 43.8 field goal percentage and they never relinquished its double-digit lead as they went on for the 18-point victory.
