Accuracy and teamwork lift Griffins over Blackburn
Fontbonne shot their second-best all season as Haring scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out eight assists. Walker led the team with 16 points and Schraut went 6-7 with 12 points and eight rebounds.
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University women's basketball shot 44.4% in the field this afternoon, their second best performance of the season. The Griffins' accuracy elevated their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record to 2-1 with a 75-50 victory over Blackburn College.
After securing a 19-9 advantage in the first quarter, Fontbonne almost doubled their score while Blackburn scored 12. The Griffins led 39-21 at halftime and held their largest lead (29 points) with four minutes left in the game.
Senior Emmie Haring came close to a triple double as she recorded 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. All of her rebounds came on the defensive end a she also recorded two steals. Sophomore Kaitlynn Walker secured the game-high 16 points while shooting six of ten in the field and three of four at the line. She netted her only three-point attempt in the second quarter and also recorded four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Also performing well was junior Sarah Schraut. Schraut was perfect through three quarters (5-5) and redeemed her only miss two minutes into the final frame with an offensive board and a layup. She went six-of-seven as she scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
As a team, the Griffins shot 15-of-22 at the free throw line and now average 69.7% on the season. The Griffins recorded three more rebounds than the Beavers and committed five less turnovers with 42 of their points from inside the paint. Fontbonne recorded 18 assists in the win while Blackburn recorded six.
Fontbonne is at home Tuesday for a 6 p.m. non-conference matchup against Robert Morris University of Springfield.
